How to make a LinkedIn profile private?

Although it’s a social media, where people are supposed to socialize, LinkedIn has a few privacy features which you can access through the Settings tab. To make your LinkedIn profile private, you can adjust your privacy settings to control what information is visible to others. Here’s how you can do it in a few steps:

  1. Log into your LinkedIn account.
  2. Click on your profile picture or the “Me” icon at the top of your LinkedIn homepage. Select “Settings & Privacy” from the dropdown menu.
  3. Click on the “Visibility” tab on the left-hand side. In this menu you can select what others can see when you view their profiles, as well as the visibility of your LinkedIn activity and your connections. The menu is divided in two sections – Visibility of your profile and network and Visibility of your LinkedIn activity. Here are the most important options in each section:

Visibility of your profile and network

  • Profile viewing – what others see when you’ve viewed their profile. In this menu you can choose between:
  • Your name and headline.
  • Private profile characteristics (e.g., “Someone at [Company]”).
  • Private mode (anonymous).
  • Page visit visibility – whether organizations can see that you visited their LinkedIn Page or not.
  • Edit your public profile – this is probably one of the most important settings when it comes to profile visibility. Through this page, you can choose which sections of your profile are visible and to whom. You can make your profile accessible only for connections or all people on the platform, or even for people outside LinkedIn. If you choose the last one, your profile could be visible in search results like Google and Bing.
  • Email Visibility – who can see your email address
  • Connections visibility – whether or not your connections can see your complete connections list.

Visibility of your LinkedIn activity

  • Manage active status – here you can choose who can see that you are currently active while you are using LinkedIn.
  • Mentions and tags – if this option is on, people will be able mention or tag you in content posted on LinkedIn
  • Followers – who can follow you on LinkedIn
