The Balkan International Wine Competition Partners with the Leading Trade Fair in the World

The Competition is hosted for the first time in Serbia

This year’s program of Balkan International Wine Competition (BIWC) starts with a masterclass at the international trade fair ProWein in Dusseldorf. “Balkan Wine Stars – Trophy and medal winners from BIWC 2019” will take place on 16 March at 12:15 p.m. at DESA, Halle 15 B 03 and will be led by Rod Smith, Master of Wine (MW), judge at BIWC 2019. This masterclass also marks the beginning of the partnership between BIWC and ProWein. From 2021 onwards, when the competition is celebrating its 10th edition, BIWC will have its own stall at the world’s most important exhibition.

The digital catalogue of the awarded wines at BIWC 2019 is also ready. Spread to 15 000 wine importers from all over the world, the catalogue continues BIWC’s efforts of promoting the Balkan wines. For the past eight editions the team managed to create the category “Balkan wine” which reflects quality and authenticity and established the local sorts as the greatest wine treasure for the region.

“We start a rotation of the Competition, aiming at greater integration of the wine cellars from all Balkan countries and at  their better exposure in the region and in Europe”, says eng. Galina Niforou, managing director of the forum. “We got an invitation coming from London to organise a Balkan wine festival there and we are considering the idea. The brand “Balkan wine”  benefits all wine cellars in the region, we register higher interest from worldwide importers and distributors. There will be importers and distributors from the USA, Canada, Japan, Holland, The UK and more at this year’s edition of the festival.”

The Competition, hosted from 28th to 30th may in the Serbian capital Belgrade, has its ninth edition and selects the best wine produced on the Balkans. The prestigious judging panel includes four Masters of wines, the first Bulgarian Master Sommelier Svetoslav Manolev, who works in London, wine professionals and experts from around the world. The BIWC chairman Konstantinos Lazarakis MW tells about this year’s edition of BIWC:

“Serbia is a country where lots of wine is consumed and apart from being a producer, it is a country that imports wine too. After the Competition on 28-30 May  we will organise an exhibition with all samples – on 30 May in Hotel Falkensteiner in Belgrade, where we have invited the HORECA sector of Serbia, wine lovers, sommeliers. Inevitably, the good knowledge of wines from the region and the integration between countries will benefit the wine cellars”.

In 2020 at the heart of Sofia the “Wine Town” of the Balkan wine festival will be constructed again and will meet you with the most interesting and fascinating wines from the Balkan region. From 11 to 13 June all residents and guests of Sofia will have the opportunity to enjoy exceptional wines in a modern, urban atmosphere, surrounded by music, friends and various attractions and recreations – irresistible offers for the summer evenings on Thursday and Friday and the whole Saturday. The Balkan wine festival is taking place with the support of Sofia’s mayor Yordanka Fandakova.

BIWCF’s main mission is to promote the Balkan wines and the wine culture in Bulgaria and worldwide. With their 1,8 tons of wine annually, The Balkans take the 5th place in the world after the biggest wine producing countries – Italy, France, Spain and the USA. The Balkans International Wine Competition is the event that gathers the world wine elitte to see, taste and discover the richness and the variety of the Balkan wines. Every year, the awarded wines are celebrated at a special ceremony and gala dinner, known as “Balkan Wine Oscars”. This year this prestigious evening will be on 12 June in Sofia.
