1000 Wines from 100 Wine Cellars Arrive in Sofia for the Balkan International Wine Competition and Festival

Four special master classes will reveal wine’s secrets for you

The eighth edition of the Balkan International Wine Festival will offer three days, full of emotions, at the beginning of June, when around 1000 wines from 100 wine cellars from the Balkans will be tasted by citizens and worldwide guests of Sofia. The luxurious tents of the event will be placed at the open area in front of the National Palace of Culture between 7 and 9 June 2019.

While the preparations for the festival run with full speed, registration for the competition which will select the best wines from the whole Balkan region, is ongoing. It will take place on 5-7 June and the awards will be given by international judging panel, which includes four Masters of Wine (MW) – the most prestigious title for a wine expert. The jury’s chairman is the first MW on the Balkans – Konstantinos Lazarakis.

All refined tastes will be provoked by unseen variety of wines. Among the participants in the exhibition are the best 100 wine producers from Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, Turkey, Croatia, Slovenia, North Мacedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania and Georgia. Their wines can be tasted by all visitors, who has bought a ticket. And for those who don’t want to miss the chance to try again the delightful wine at home or who want to give unique present to a close person, wines will be offered at preferential prices.

The prestigious format Sofia Restaurant Week will take care the taste of delicacy wines to be combined with wonderful food. Guests will have the chance to visit different restaurants, offering thematic cuisine – Greek, Turkish, Serbian, Thai, Bulgarian, Italian, French, etc.

Some great musicians will add to the lovely atmosphere. Some of them are Vivo Montana, Merudia, Angel Zaberski. Of course, the organisation committee has prepared lots of surprises, which will be revealed during the long festive weekend.

Four special master classes will reveal wine’s secrets and will provoke your taste.

BIWC Chairman Konsantinos Lazarakis MW and Chef Yorgos Hrisanidis will devote you to the secrets of the tempting Greek summer with their master class “Retsina + Mezze”. Thanks to them you will know all about this traditional Greek wine and how to find your way in the variety of wine cellars, types and tastes.

The master class of the top wine expert, living in London – Serhat Narsap, and Tyurkan Tyurker from the Turkish restaurant “Turkuoise” will bring us in Turkey – unknown, mysterious and charming. Together with them we will get to know the modern pattern of Turkish wines, combined with traditional Turkish cuisine. Both experts promise true feast for the senses. Because everything, made and served with charm, smile and mastery, cannot be forgotten.

With the Let’s shake it master class we can merge two summer pleasures – cocktails and wine. Darko Angelski, owner of 5L Speakeasy Bar, and Ivana Simyanovska, will lead, and protagonist will be the wine sort Tamyanka. Who is going to win – Darko’s inspiring sexy cocktails or the grabbing wines, presented by Ivana?

Summer makes us all put on pink glasses. Together with one of the most prominent experts of rosé wines – Rod Smith MW – we will pour some summer in our glasses with the master class Vive Le Rosé! and will understand which are the most trendy rosé wines on the Balkans.

The festival will be hospitable for a wide audience. For the purpose, the tents will be equipped with children and photo corner; free zone for pets; stage with musical performances and thematic stand-up program; retail corner; festival bookshop; top restaurants (ethno and gurme) and places for eating; demonstrations of the MasterChef winners; gold tent with the awarded wines from the competition; places for painting with wine… and many more surprises which will enrich your senses with emotions and wonderful memories!
